Working for The Samaritans requires more commitment than most volunteering. Our volunteers are on the frontline, helping to operate our 24/7 hotline and email services.
A SAM has to put the caller first with every call – because it may be the last call from somebody who feels that life is no longer worth living.
For this reason, volunteering with The Samaritans is not simply a routine of turning up and being added to a rota. All SAMs undergo training to ensure that when performing the service, they:
- Have the ability to really listen to others without passing judgement
- Refrain from giving advice
- Leave their own religious beliefs and political convictions at the door
- Abide by the Befrienders Worldwide Charter in terms of work principles and values
