Why volunteer with The Samaritans?
Volunteering with The Samaritans is not just a way you may connect with our community and give back to our society. You gain in the volunteering process by making a difference in someone’s life and knowing that you were there when someone needed you most.
The Samaritans is a volunteer-led organisation. Volunteers make contributions to all areas of our operation in Hong Kong for over four decades, we have been fortunate to have amazing people volunteer for us – helping us to deliver vital services to the community.
What sort of people volunteer for The Samaritans?
Samaritans are ordinary people. You may have travelled with a Samaritan on the MTR or waited next to one in the supermarket.
What makes Samaritans special is their discretion, reliability, open-mindedness and patience. They are ordinary people willing to devote at least four hours a week to offering a hand, and a listening, empathetic ear to other ordinary people they don’t know. What the Samaritans have in common is the undivided attention they give to every call.
Formal qualifications and previous experience are not required for being a good listener.
All our volunteers are at least English-speaking, in additional to Cantonese, Mandarin and other languages. If you would like to become a volunteer for our listening service, please check out information on the training where you can also apply to be a volunteer.
